The Unrivaled playoffs began with a bang Sunday as Vinyl BC punched its ticket to the inaugural championship game with a 73-70 win over Lunar Owls BC.
Vinyl outscored the Lunar Owls 23-8 in the fourth quarter to set up the game-winning layup by Dearica Hamby. On the other end of the bracket is Rose BC, who toppled Laces BC in the first semifinal. Rhyne Howard led Rose with 23 points.
Napheesa Collier, who was listed as “questionable” before tipoff with a left ankle injury, dropped 36 points in the Lunar Owls’ loss.
Earlier in the evening, Rose BC took down Laces BC 63-57 to become the first team to advance to Monday’s championship game. The Laces took a 13-point lead into halftime behind 27 combined points from Kayla McBride and Tiffany Hayes. In the third quarter, Chelsea Gray dropped 15 points to match her first-half tally and get Rose BC within two points.
Gray would drill the game-winning 3-pointer to advance to the inaugural Unrivaled championship on Monday. Gray went 5 of 8 from the perimeter for a league-record 39 points. Alyssa Thomas scored 20 points for the Laces.
Ahead of the semifinals Sunday, co-founder Napheesa Collier was named Most Valuable Player. Collier averaged 25.7 points, 10.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists and shot 61.3 percent from the floor in 14 games for the 13-1 Lunar Owls. The 2024 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year led the league in points, field goals made and steals per game.
It hasn’t been just team success for Collier this season. The Lynx star won the Unrivaled 1-on-1 tournament to claim a $200,000 prize, beating Mystics forward Aaliyah Edwards for the crown. Collier was also named to the inaugural First Team All-Unrivaled alongside Chelsea Gray (Rose BC) and Kayla McBride (Laces BC).
The championship game between Vinyl BC and Rose BC will take place Monday at Wayfair Arena in Medley, Florida.
