I never saw the movie “Chicago,” but I’ve seen the musical twice at the Muny (in St. Louis) — twice because the last three shows of the 2021 season were canceled due to a COVID outbreak, so they brought the production back in 2022. It was entertaining, although, if I’m being perfectly honest, the story — the entire concept of it — left me a bit cold.
Still, there are some snappy tunes from “Chicago,” not least of which is “Cell Block Tango,” a song sung by six women in the Cook County Jail, justifying their dispensing of their respective significant others, with the memorable refrain: “He had it coming.”
I couldn’t help but be reminded of it as I saw some of the response from the mainstream media after Sunday’s assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. That’s twice in the span of two months for those keeping score — rather a lot of attempting, don’t you think?

But rather than pausing and reflecting on what role they themselves might be playing in this bedlam, the legacy press is content to imply — if not outright contend — that the Bad Orange Man likely has brought these attempts on himself, what with his sharp-elbowed rhetoric and all.
