Barbara Walters’s Fifth Avenue Aerie Finds a Buyer After Price Cut

Barbara Walters’s longtime New York City apartment has a prospective new owner, once again. The Central Park-facing co-op was priced at $17.75 million in November, when it went into contract; however, the potential buyer had a change of heart and pulled out of the deal. In January, the iconic journalist’s luxury co-op quietly came back onto the market at $16.995—$2.755 million less than its original listing price in spring of 2023. Now, according to TMZ, a new buyer has emerged to claim the place Walters called home from 1989 until her December 2022 death. Alexa Lambert of Compass holds the listing, but the price tag for the historic digs has not been released.

Should the deal go through, the new buyer will score an abode with a starry heritage as well as incredible views. Situated in a 1925-build, the full-floor unit boasts 11 rooms in total and 10-foot-high ceilings throughout. Walters leaned heavily into classical decor, evidenced by her use of traditional drapes and pieces like her 18th-century lacquered secretary bookcase engraved with Rococo chinoiserie. But the legendary journalist also embraced contemporary style, reflected most boldly in her red-lacquered sitting room and office space. A wood-burning fireplace warms the formal living room and primary bedroom.

On November 6, the groundbreaking news anchor’s estate held an auction at Bonhams, placing 300 lots of furniture, art, jewelry, and clothing worth $8 million up for bidding. A known collector, Walters’s auction was filled with treasures like 19th-century paintings by American artists John Singer Sargent and William Merritt Chase, among others, and an original Eames chair covered in red leather.
