The partisan and snarky part of me would like to be able to relay to you that the speech delivered by Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff Tuesday night at the DNC was cringe and awful. And, to be fair, there was some cringe:
Doug Emhoff is CRINGEY.

But no, the speech wasn’t awful. Not at all. It began with a video introduction narrated by his son, Cole, featuring family photos of his father and telling the story of his life. It was lighthearted and sweet, and it set the tone for Emhoff’s remarks.Â
Emhoff then took the stage and managed to come off as charming, funny, human, and relatable. In truth, he seemed naturally at ease and came across as authentic as he spoke of how he and Kamala Harris were introduced, began dating, got married, and built a life together. He described a woman most people would like and admire. And he did so sincerely. In short, he sold it.Â
Well, maybe not the bit about her laugh…
“You know that laugh! I LOVE that laugh!”
You might be the only one who does, Doug. pic.twitter.com/WEK4qUiZZ6

Now, that doesn’t mean Emhoff doesn’t have his issues — while he acknowledged having gone through a divorce, he elided the not-so-pretty story that goes along with that.Â

Nor does it mean that his glowing descriptions of his wife can’t have holes poked in them. Â

And they will. While Kamala won’t take the stage to formally address the DNC until Thursday, we’ll continue to see awkward, staged clips of her and those moments when she’s not on script and devolves into Queen Word Salad.Â

But her husband did right by her in his speech Tuesday night, and he may well prove to be one of her best assets.Â
